Born November 1752 in Bucks County Pennsylvania.
1777 served under Captain McDonald. They went to Fort Lowry. He served under him or Captain Black for 2 years. They were stationed for a time at Fort Lowry. After the war he moved to Kentucky.

When the call for men to go to Boston echoed through the Alleghenies in 1775, James Vanzandt responded. He enlisted under Captain Robert Cluggage in the 1st Pennsylvania under Colonel Thompson. Colonel Thompson left and was replaced with Lt Colonel Hand. After the siege they went to New York and were stationed on Long Island until the British fleet arrived. When his time was up, he decided to go home because of the Tory incursions that were occurring.
December 1777 he served as a Lt in 1st company, 3rd Bn., Bedford County Militia. Received Depreciation pay for this service.
He served under Captain Henry Black in 1778 and again in 1779.
When he received his pension in 1833 he was 78. He passed away in Arkansas in January of 1834.
He was born on September 22, 1752, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He lived in Canoe Valley, Barree Township at the time of his enlistment.
He served under Captain Samuel Davis in 1776 at Princeton. Although he arrived with Colonel Piper, during the battle he was with Colonel Smith when they took Bennett’s Island. He spent much of that winter in the east. He came back home in March.
In 1777 he served under Captain Black who was under Colonel Piper. He served that summer. The next (1778) spring he served under Captain Black who was under Major Cluggage.
In 1779 he enlisted under Captain William Simonton. 9 months service. In 1780 he served again in this unit.
Married Sarah Johnson in 1783.
In 1833 he received his pension. In 1835 he passed away.
He is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetary, Belleville PA.
