Earth Day Tree Planting

April 21, 2024

Drop in between 11 AM and 3 PM

Celebrate Earth Day by planting trees on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at the Fort Roberdeau Historic Site. Join Jody Wallace aka “The Creature Teacher” and other tree educators to explore why planting native trees restores wildlife habitat, fights climate change, and re-creates the historic landscape of Fort Roberdeau. Shovels and gloves will be provided.
Learn hands on of how to plant a tree then plant as many as you want!!
The event is free, donations are gratefully accepted. It’s open to all ages, small children will need grown-up help and supervision.
Check the Fort Roberdeau Facebook page if there is bad weather. In that case the event will be postponed until the following Sunday at the same time.

Join in the fight!

The Weed Warriors of Fort Roberdeau is a program in which “armies” (of mostly middle and high school students) remove invasive plants, replacing them with native trees and shrubs. This “battle” occurs early spring, late fall, on a woodlot adjacent to the Fort. In addition to removal and planting, activities include learning about old growth forest through interpretation of historic art and rope circle activity, site measurement, understanding biodiversity through playing the “food web game”, carbon sequestration estimation.

The Objective:

– Restore the Historic Landscape of Fort Roberdeau

– Increase biodiversity

– Mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration

– Provide students with hands on STEAM based learning

– Develop environmentally aware, environmentally active, citizens

The People:

– The Commander: The project leader in charge of the program

– Planting Crew Team Leaders: teach how and supervise planting operations (proper planting, staking and installation of tree shelters)

– Invasive Plant Removal Team Leaders: teach how and supervise plant removal operations (digging or cutting, hauling to brush piles)

– Environmental Educator: Lead activities that explain why troops are engaged as Weed Warriors

– Adults Accompanying the Group- required to engage and help supervise

– Soldiers: students engaged in the fight against invasive species and the repopulation of native trees
